We all love a sweet treat every now and then, but with so many options out there, it can sometimes be hard to know the perfect place to get dessert. Sometimes you need a trusted friend or reviewer to help guide you through the numerous choices at your disposal.
In this review, we will be helping you narrow down your options by providing our personal thoughts on a local business in Crystal Lake, IL called Coco Rolls, an ice cream parlor with a large assortment of unique, hand-rolled flavors. Let’s eat!
Coco Rolls (Crystal Lake, IL) Review
My partner and I happened upon Coco Rolls’ parlor while celebrating our one year anniversary, after finishing up some paint-it-yourself pottery at an establishment nearby. We were initially drawn in by the name, thinking it was quite cute for a dessert place, and we had briefly looked up its menu online and were left impressed by some pictures we saw.
Stopping in, we noticed there was a longer line than we were expecting, and we patiently waited for our turn to order, evaluating the menu items carefully in order to choose what we wanted.
On their menu, they have twenty-three (23) different flavors of Thai Ice Cream, ranging from Brown Sugar to Red Bean to Dragon Fruit, Mango, and more. They also have all the classic flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, Oreo, mint chocolate, etc.
Aside from their rather unique flavors, Coco Rolls also offers Egg Waffle Cones for a few of the classic flavors. These Egg Waffle Cones are very fluffy and light, akin to the kind of waffles you would make for a morning breakfast.
To drink, the parlor features bubble tea, cheese smoothies, and some various other items. There are a whopping forty-two (42) different options/flavors for drinks, which is quite large for a smaller establishment.
Prices across the different menu items varied. It is best to check the restaurant’s website for current pricing, but during our visit, the cost was the most prohibitive factor from an enjoyment standpoint.
The prices for ice cream items ran a bit higher than your average ice cream chain, and the bubble tea was cheaper, though it neared the same price as the ice cream. The Egg Waffle Cone ice cream items were the most expensive, enough so that we only ordered one out of the two of us.
When we finally made our way up to the register, we ordered the Brown Sugar ice cream, Egg Waffle Cone Vanilla ice cream, and one of the Milk Teas with a fruit-flavored topping.
Let’s talk about the flavor of the ice cream. In one word: excellent!
The ice cream was very rich, just the right amount of sweetness without overpowering the intended flavor or making you hyper-aware of the calories. The whipped cream was light, and the Egg Waffle Cone was fluffy and deceptively durable, despite its flexibility and ability to pull it apart to take little nibbles here and there.
As far as ice cream goes, this was some of the best dessert that we’ve had in the area, and we were extremely impressed that our spur-of-the-moment adventure had turned up such results!
I was especially surprised that my pick of the Brown Sugar ice cream ended up being a decent choice, as I mostly just wanted to try out one of Coco Rolls’ unique flavors after surveying their menu. The Brown Sugar ice cream tasted exactly as I expected, and I would gladly get it again (though I’ll probably try another flavor the next time I go).
The ice cream wasn’t just impressive due to its flavor, however; it was also elegantly crafted. If you look closely at the Brown Sugar ice cream, you may be able to see that the ice cream has been hand-rolled very neatly and uniformly, standing up vertically on end.
Coco Rolls’ attention to detail in aesthetics, style, and flavor really made the visit feel like a full experience, separating it apart from the crowd and quickly making it a noteworthy spot to my partner and I.
As for the milk tea, it was a touch too sweet, but we still ended up enjoying it very much. The topping was the perfect size to easily fit through the straw, and it was a refreshing companion to go with the ice cream.
The portions for all the items were adequately-sized, though were a bit on the smaller side for the price range, all things considered.
We had a lot more positive things to say about Coco Rolls than negative, however, and we are eagerly planning our next visit for our next date night. Good job, Coco Rolls!

Impressive range of offerings for a small shop, though menu items can get a bit pricey for the portion sizes. Long wait times to create the elegant arrangements. Unique items such as the egg waffle cones help make Coco Rolls stand out from the crowd.
